Securing your website

It is essential to conduct an update when these become available. Upgrades tend to revise or fix security software and therefore need to be run immediately. Passwords are another security issue that can be hacked easily by intruders. Having a strong password that is hack resistant is important for securing the site. Using passwords like numeric, alpha and special characters makes for a strong password. Having at least 8 characters is good for security also.

Keep your admin email address away from the public eye. This is the address which is used to get into the host server for your site. Using a different content email address will help keep your site safe from being scammed. Also, consider the phishing email and whether it came from your hosting company. Adding a different table prefix to your database might be used to keep hackers from your data.

Having an .htaccess file is good to further secure your site by specifying security restrictions for a specific directory. Passwords can be stored or made in this file. Use robots.txt files to give details to the search engine spiders as to which folders are to be indexed and which are not.

Regular backups of your site are essential and must be done each day. Having a recent backup saves the time in case the site has been compromised. The backup includes the whole backing up of your site, email file and database.
